Yay! The most wonderful time of year is upon us – Christmas! As soon as it hits October I’m already thinking of all the Christmas themed things I want to make from gift wrapping, decorations, festive stationery to table settings. Once December arrives all my afternoons turn into long sessions of Christmas crafting while I watch the latest Christmas Hallmark Movies as well as a few classics like Home Alone and The Rankin Bass Collection.
You can see from my previous Party Jumper DIY that I’m quite a fan of the ‘ugly sweaters’ so I thought I would combine my love for these and gift wrapping and make Ugly Christmas Sweater Gift Tags to adorn Xmas gifts or for hanging on the chrissie tree!
How to make Ugly Christmas Sweater Gift Tags

Making the Ugly Christmas Sweater Gift Tags
First we need to make a jumper template. Free hand draw a sweater onto some thick card stock and cut-out.
Once you have your template you can start making lots of different colourful sweaters. I used a mixture of card and paper stock to make these ones.
Ugly Christmas Sweater Paper Cut Embellishments
The great thing about this project is that you can personalise your gift tags anyway you want. It also gives you the opportunity to use up your craft stash (if your like me – I have boxes filled with pretty pattern paper) as well as your collection of craft punches and tools.
Paper cutting is one of my favourite crafts – it’s like colouring in with paper.
For my embellishments I cut up triangles to make Christmas trees, pattern bladed scissors to cut up paper strips and used some of my festive craft punches to make ornaments, snow flakes and cute bows.
Decorating your Ugly Christmas Sweaters
Here are a few ways to decorate your gift tag jumpers.
Star stickers are perfect for making a bright Christmas tree topper!
Examples of the different paper cut layers I made to make the puddings.
Use coloured textas and draw your designs onto the gift tags. Polka dots are a DIY Kiosk favourite and the Christmas lights are fun and festive. Christmas gift wrap or washi tape works a treat as well. No drawing or paper cutting is required.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating your Ugly Christmas Sweater gift tags – I had so much fun!
To finish, all you need to do is punch a hole into the top of the gift tag and thread through a 10cm piece of twine.
