DIY: Day of the Dead: Halloween Ornament

Boo! Happy Halloween! I’ve been watching lots of spooky 90s TV shows and movies such as Are you Afraid of the Dark and Hocus Pocus while I crafted this Mexican inspired Day of the Dead skull trick-or-treat ornament. I did go trick-or-treating once when I was a teen, but since Halloween is not a often celebrated event in Australia, you wouldn’t have much luck when door knocking for sweets – I did get lots of apples and super-duper ice blocks though! However looking at all the decorations on offer this year it seems we are starting to take on more spooky-festivities. Yay!

This Day of the Dead Halloween Ornament is made to hang on the front of a bedroom door to surprise your kids’, a loved one or even hang on the front door to surprise guests and trick-or-treaters.

How to make paper-cut flowers

Let’s make sweet paper flowers to decorate the forehead of the Day of the Dead skull.

Using a flower craft punch make some coloured paper flowers.

Use a hole punch to make confetti. The confetti dots will become the inside of the flowers.

Glue hole punch dots to flower center.

OOOOO! Look at those oh-so-sweet paper flowers!

Glue your flowers to the top of the Day of the Dead Skull. Only glue to the back center of the flowers though.

How to make a Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bag

Fill your Halloween goodie bag with sweets – yum! to marshmallows!

Make sure you fill it nice and full! Gather the top of the treat bag together.

Tie it up with string. Make sure you leave enough string to tie to the ornament hoop at the end.

Stick double-sided tape to the back of the Day of the Dead skull. Attach to the front of your Halloween treat bag.

Attach your Day of the Dead skull decorated treat bag to a metal hoop by tying the excess treat bag string around the hoop.

Feel free to decorate your ornament hoop with some Halloween extras. I included a felt jack-o-lantern pumpkin on mine.

Now your Day of the Dead: Halloween ornament is ready for hanging!
